Weatherization Programs Save Electricity
Weatherization Programs reduce the amount of electricity and energy that is required to heat and cool homes, as well as lower the amount of energy needed to provide hot water. Renters are also able to receive this aid. Weatherization saves energy dollars, improves the safety and comfort of a home, and reduces our dependence on foreign oil.
Services that are included in weatherization typically include :
- maintenance, testing, repairs and/or replacement of heating and cooling systems;
- caulking and weatherstripping around windows and doors;
- repair or replacement of storm windows;
- replacement or repair of outside doors and/or windows;
- the addition of insulation to floors, walls or ceilings;
- minor repairs, as needed, to ensure energy is saved;
Since 1978, the U.S. Department of Energy 's (DOE) Weatherization Program has helped more than 5.7 million Americans weatherize their homes. The average weatherization update will lower overall electricity and energy bills by almost $400 per year. The average heating bill is reduced by 32%. This energy saving program, when combined with free heating oil from the Oil Heat assistance program, can be a powerful combination and way for families to save substantial money on electricity and energy bills.
A trained inspector will review and assess your home for energy saving A typical inspection performed will include Combustion Appliance testing for safety and efficiency, Blower Door testing for air leakage, and a Health and Safety inspection. The results of this review will lead to repairs, improvements (as indicated above) and other work done on your home all in an effort to save electricity and energy.
