Save Electricity With LED Christmas Lights

Strings of Christmas lights that are made from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are rapidly gaining in both availability and popularity. This is great news for the homeowner, or apartment dweller, who wants an easy way to save energy and money, while still be able to light up the tree or house for the holidays.

What Are The Benefits of LED Lights?

When you compare LED Christmas lights to conventional incandescent lighting, LED bulbs have several benefits.

  • Energy efficiency: Studies show that LED lights are up to 90 percent more energy efficient than incandescent lights, and they will save you electricity and money.
  • Long lasting: LED lights are made from “solid-state construction”, which makes them both sturdier and more resistant to damage than conventional lights. According to the United States Department of Energy, white LED lights have been found to have a useful life of over 35,000 hours, which is an incredible four years of continuous operation. Also, when one light bulb goes out on a light string, the others stay lit.
  • Safety: The plastic that covers the LED bulbs is cool to the touch. (Non LED lights are hot, so you always have the fire potential.)

Studies show that you can save from $2-$3 in energy costs per string of lights. While it may not seem like much, that is savings per string. So if you use a total of 10 light strings, you can save $20-$30 per year from LED lights. And since they last much longer than standard lights (LEDs last many years longer) before you need to replace them, over the years you will save hundreds of dollars on your electricity bill.
