Ways to Save Electricity

Dynegy Inc. Chief Executive Officer Bruce Williamson comments on the outlook for electricity prices in the U.S. and offers ways and tips on how to save electricity, including turning off your computer. More.

Williamson made his comments today in a telephone interview after Houston-based Dynegy, the owner of power plants in 12 U.S. states, reported a net loss of $152 million in the first quarter, compared with net income of $14 million a year earlier.

Spot prices in the PJM Interconnection LLC power market, the largest in the U.S., averaged $78.60 per megawatt-hour in the first quarter, up 19 percent from a year earlier. Natural- gas futures have been trading higher than $11 per million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while crude-oil futures have been more than $120 a barrel.

On the possible direction of increasing power prices given rising prices for gas and oil:

``Power usually is a lagging price responder to those underlying fuel prices, or fuel commodities.''

``We think we're very well positioned with our commercial strategy and how we've worked things.''

``We keep saying that the supply and demand is going to tighten and prices will be headed up from here, and that looks generally like where the mega-trends are heading.'. This will put more emphasis and means on ways to save electricity”.'

On rising natural-gas prices:

``It just continues to show that the U.S. is competing on a global basis for energy with the rest of the   world.'' From www.bloomberg.com
