On some days, the dial on the electric meter outside some homeowners can go backwards!
One example. Fran McDermid’s home is outfitted with 18 solar electric panels, so on a sunny day, the solar panels may generate more electricity than the house requires. This is part of what makes McDermid’s home both a money-saver and environmentally friendly.
So if at any point I’m producing more electricity than my home is using, it is great to go out and see that time of use electric meter moving backwards.
Envinity Green Design and Construction worked with McDermid on her house, which also has a rainwater collection system, a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar water heaters, and porous driveway pavement. It even has a a dual flushing toilet that has two options for how much water to use.
While there are high tech ways to save energy and electricity, some of these options may be out of homeowners budgets. There are also countless are methods how to save electricity that cost less money.
