Georgians residents can now receive numerous tax breaks if they install energy-efficient equipment or appliances, such as solar hot water heaters, because of a new electricity conservation law that took effect in June.
The tax incentives cover solar energy equipment used either for heating, Energy Star-rated heat pumps, and and the breaks cover electricity as well as other energy-efficient building products.
There is a large opportunity to install the equipment. The equipment must be installed between July 1 this year and Dec. 31, 2012. To receive the tax break, consumers must apply with the Georgia Department of Revenue.
The department will give out almost $3 million in tax credits each year as a way to save electricity. The tax breaks will be available on a first-come, first serve basis.
The tax breaks for state residents are either 35 percent of the cost of the equipment/appliance or a set amount per item, whichever amount is less.
Georgia is continuing in its efforts to save residents money on high electricity costs and continues to come up with ways for consumers to reduce consumption
