Ways to Save Electricity

CFL Light Bulbs Save Energy and Electricity.

Replacing incandescent bulbs with CFL energy saving light bulbs is a very effective way to save electricity. CFL light bulbs use over 75 percent less electricity and last almost 10 times longer than a regular light bulb. Also, a single 20 watt CFL bulb provides as much light as a 100 watt ordinary bulb.

· It is hard to believe, but lighting does account for about 15% of a home's electric use.

· To save electricity, do something as simple as turning off lights that are not needed. Be sure to use lights which will give an adequate amount of light without eye strain. Also, if you install dimmers, they will help to control the amount of light.

· Fluorescent lamps provide significantly more light than incandescent lamps, and these should always be used where possible to save energy. They give out much more lumens per watt. For example, a mere 4-watt fluorescent lamp would save over 150 watts of electricity over a short seven-hour period. These large savings, over a period of time, more than pay for the any fixtures you would need to use.

· Rather than leaving the light outside your house on all night, replacing the light with a motion sensor is another way to save electricity.

· Another way to save electricity is by using photoelectric timers and cells for security lighting. They can save energy.

· Lighting timers and controls help are another way how to save energy dollars and is a great way to save electricity too. Timers set to turn lights on and off at predetermined times while the photocell controls are sensitive to light and will turn lamps off and on at sundown and sunrise. Dimmers can be used to control the level of illumination according to how much light you may want in a given situation.

· A lot of money and energy can be saved just by matching energy saving light bulb wattage to lighting needs. For example, you do not need a high wattage lamp in a hallway or alcove.

· You can save electricity and energy, and the savings can add up, just by turning off the lights when you leave the room. If you use fluorescent lighting, however, turn those lights off only if you will be gone longer than about 15 minutes. This is because fluorescent lights use more energy in turning on as they use during 15 minutes of operation, so it is not worthwhile or efficient to turn them off for brief periods.

· By keeping lights and fixtures clean, lighting efficiency can be improved and can lead to yet another way to save energy. As much as 20 % of the light generated can be lost to hazing dusts. Also take advantage of reflected light by keeping portable fixtures as close as possible to light-coloured walls or other surfaces. These easy steps may reduce the number and wattage of bulbs you need and help you save on your energy bills.

· Always be sure to turn a three-way bulb to the lowest lighting level when watching TV. You will reduce the glare and use less energy.
