Energy Star Rebates and Sales Tax Holiday in Alabama

For the past few years, legislation to place energy-efficient Energy Star products in a sales tax holiday have been presented to the Alabama state Legislature as one of the ways to save electricity.. In addition, in 2008, the Joint Legislative Committee on Energy Policy also strongly recommended such legislation. Sen. Kim Benefield, D-Woodland as well as Rep. Greg Wren, R-Montgomery were the co sponsors for the 2008 legislation.

Under the legislation proposed legislation, ENERGY STAR products and appliances, and all those items identified by EPA as energy efficient, and valued at under $1,500 would be excluded from sales tax.

The Alabama Retail Association has long been a strong advocate of this electricity saving legislation. We ask residents to include a request to add energy-efficient products in any letter to their local representative concerning the sales tax holiday. This legislation is a great way to save electricity.
